The Weekly Link Dump

It’s been an interesting week in both the real world and the digital world for us. In our flesh and blood universe, we, here in Ottawa, are busy downgrading (upgrading?) to our spring jackets; in the online world, we’re helping the web do some spring cleaning, and fishing out some interesting tidbits in the process. Here’s what caught our attention this week.

Starting things off light is this Onion video report about the Iron Man trailer. It’s all about the deadpan, and these two newspeople pull it off brilliantly.

Next, we have a must-read glimpse into an Ad Age roundtable with top marketing bloggers like Rohit Bhargava and Sean Howard. Why should companies blog? Should some companies blog? And how does a company make reading its blog worthwhile?

On a slightly different note, it appears that violence is good for kids. Gerard Jones, veteran comic author, who’s written for everything from Batman to Pokémon, presents an interesting case about how make-believe violence can help a kid develop their personal sense of selfhood. It was written in 06, a lifetime in online standards, but it’s more relevant than ever today, especially with the next chapter in the most hotly debated videogame series of all time coming out in a few weeks…What do you think about it?

Speaking of pushing social boundaries, there’s always something to be said about games that can go the opposite route and appeal to everyone from kids to granparents, but be completely free of questionable content. World of Goo is such a game, and it looks awesome. Seeing independent developers creating this calibre of content bodes very well for the industry as a whole.
