Land of the Dead - Loot and Shoot Advergame Review
Land of the Dead - Loot and Shoot is an advergame promoting the Land of the Dead movie (and impending DVD release). The game puts the player in a typical FPS shooter, as they try to clear the levels of all the zombies.
What I liked: This seems to be a very well done game. The modeling, texturing and lighting in the game is quite well done. They did a good job making it look like a dirty zombie-infested grocery store. The game is a typical FPS game (in a browser no less!) and it pretty much plays like one. This probably won’t be accessible to a casual audience but will work well for more tech-savvy users.
What I didn’t like: The gameplay itself is a bit simplistic, and there doesn’t seem to be much depth. It took a couple tries to get to level 2 and that level seems to be exactly like level 1. There might be more after that, but this alone made me stop after the first level.
There’s also an overabundance of warnings before the game starts. A bit of a warning is okay but there isn’t any reason to make the user click through an additional warning screen to play the game. Especially when the stated game requirements are not that high.
Overall: This is a very good advergame. It delivers a fun experience with a look that matches the movie, and the overall feel matches exactly what I would expect from a zombie movie.
There are things that could be improved, but all in all, this is a very solid game experience, that seems to match the campaign extremely well.
